Eps 121 – The Vatican Tapes – Pixels

Director Mark (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) Neveldine tackles the exorcism sub-genre with the theatrical release THE VATICAN TAPES featuring Michael Pena, Dougray Scott and Olivia Taylor Dudley. The film cranks up the final minutes of the movie but it is too little too late for a cinematic turkey of a horror film. Somewhere Pazuzu laughs until his side hurts.

Dave dishes a new plate of HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK with the news about the Vicious Brothers taking the reigns of Simon Barrett’s next script TEMPLE while JURASSIC WORLD 2 secures a release date in 2018. In the What Have You Been Watching, the grue-crew take a look at the Adam Sandler fantasy film PIXELS.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Dave DreherThomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week! Plus, a special report from Doc Rotten about the HNR visit to SCARES THAT CARE WEEKEND II.

Review: The Vatican Tapes (2015)

Upon reviewing video footage from the States, the Vatican becomes convinced the Anti-Christ is possessing the body of a young American named Angela. THE VATICAN TAPES attempts to spin a unique yarn in the Exorcist vein and falls on its underdeveloped face. The grue-crew unanimously and unceremoniously trounce the latest theatrical horror offering.

What Have You Been Watching: Pixels (2015)

Originally swearing he would never see another Adam Sandler film, Thomas Mariani manages to catch a screening of Sandler’s PIXELS directed by Chris Columbus. Infuriated, the young co-host and film critic destroys the film while curmudgeon The Black Saint attempts to share how the film was entirely up his alley providing low-brow, silly fun.

Eps 120 – Ant-Man – Creep

In the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe theatrical hit, ANT-MAN, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) passes his technology and powers to the unlikeliest of heroes, sad-sack criminal Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) in what is essentially Marvel’s heist comedy. The HNR grue-crew dive into the action to see if the latest offering is a minor success or a major flop.

Review: Ant-Man (2015)

After the giant, over-the-top access of Avengers: The Age of Ultron, Marvel slides back into phase 1 like mode to bring audiences ANT-MAN. The film has a long history as writer-director Edgar Wright championed long and hard to bring Hank Pym and Scott Lang to the big screen. With Peyton Reed taking over the chair as director at the last minute, the film finally makes its way into theaters this weekend. The film is more intimate and sweet than most Marvel films offering a character driven action comedy with heart. How does the HNR grue-crew respond? Ah, that’s where the fun begins.

What Have You Been Watching: Creep (2014)

Arriving to Netflix streaming this week is the Patrick Brice/Mark Duplass found footage joint CREEP. The movie follows a film maker hired to chronicle the day in the life of a dying man only to discover the subject of his day’s work is a bit off, a bit twisted, a true…creep. Things quickly escalate as more and more terrifying secrets are revealed. As the grue-crew (outside of Doc) continue to harden their declining opinion on found footage, does the latest Blumhouse offering stand a chance? Perhaps it does…

Blumhouse makes the news again as they team with the Soska Twins to produce the GSN TV horror-themed game show Hellavator. SyFy never to be too far behind the pack announces their bringing the boy bands Backstreet Boys & NSYNC together for the horror film Dead 7. Ha!

“You’ve been BLUM-ED!” The Black Saint coins a new phrase sharing his “love” for all things Blumhouse, breaking Doc’s heart in the process. THE GALLOWS gets strung up by its “Buster Browns” this week as the HNR grue-crew tear it apart. Oh, my, it is true- found footage has seen better days…

Review: The Gallows (2015)

Despite looking forward to seeing THE GALLOWS and hoping to enjoy another found footage theatrical release, even Doc Rotten is appalled by what crawled up onto the big screen and took a giant dump. Ugh. Thomas proclaims The Gallows the worst film of 2015. The Black Saint even thinks it out-stinks Area 51. It is a sad day at HNR. You are going to want to hear this one.

Review: Terminator: Genisys (2015)

Some hate it, some love it. And it is no different with the grue-crew as Santos & Thomas face off against Doc & Vixen while discussing TERMINATOR: GENISYS. Every WTF moment is discussed and every time travelling trip dissected. But what this hell is up with Matt Smith? And does it even matter? The debate is one determining if the fifth Terminator film is a summer blockbuster or an over-hyped fan-fiction film. You decide!

Review: i-Lived (2015)

Having enjoyed the Franck Khalfoun remake of Maniac – which was covered on one of the early episodes of HNR, the Grue-Crew was intrigued by his follow up feature, i-Lived. Sadly, however, the results were not as enthusiastic. Oh, my. While Thomas just comes out against the film the remaining crew try – oh, they try – to find something positive to say. Still, the discussion is lively and Santos points out that the review on HorrorNews.net proclaimed it one of the best of 2015. So…what do we know?
