Eps 195 – The Best Horror Films of 2016

The Grue-Crew are at again, counting down the best horror films of the year. 2016 was a bastard of a year stealing the most talented from us way too soon and shaking up politics and popular opinion. Yet, horror films ruled supreme winning at the box office and surprising horror fans on Blu-ray and VOD. The Black Saint, Dave Dreher, Thomas Mariani and Doc Rotten gather one last time for the year to reveal their top ten films which include high profile theatrical releases, hit foreign films, and challenging low-budget independent films. The lists are full of curiosities and expected hits alike with Train to Busan and The Conjuring 2 racking up the most notices.

And still 2016 has one last terrific entry for horror fans with the December release of The Autopsy of Jane Doe from director Andre Ovredal featuring Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox in the lead roles. The film manages to do what many films cannot – provide a thrilling mystery and a rewarding twist. The direction, the acting, and the cinematography combine to bring one last atmospheric, scary horror film to fans. The only disappointing thing about the film is that is was denied a theatrical release.

Dave guides the Horror News of the Week with a trio of trailers. First up is the Alien: Covenant trailer released on Christmas day, for some reason. Next is a clip from the upcoming film Beyond Skyline, and who cares. Last up is the awkward IMAX trailer for The Mummy missing much of its audio track, and it’s is so much better for it, for all the wrong reasons.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Dave Dreher and Thomas Mariani are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week! Oh, and don’t forget – Stump the Saint! (Brought to you by Gruesome Magazine)

Feature Review: The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

2016 ends on a great note with the film The Autopsy of Jane Doe, which ends up on many of the best of the year lists. The film is from the director of Trollhunters, Andre Ovredal, following a mortician and his son as the perform an autopsy on an unknown victim of a horrific crime scene. Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox are fantastic, and convincing, as the father and son, providing horror some of the best performances of the year. The story behind the death of “Jane Doe” is enthralling, capturing the audience’s attention and never letting go. Gruesome and frightening, the Grue-Crew have a great time recapping and reviewing this late addition to the horror films of 2016.

Special Feature: The Best Horror Films of 2016

The Grue-Crew dive into their best of lists for 2016 with fandom delight and enthusiastic glee. 2016 is a great year for horror films. The only drawback is how difficult to keep the top list to only ten films. So, here it is, the Best Horror Films of 2016.

Eps 154 – 10 Cloverfield Lane

Seemingly out of nowhere Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures released 10 Cloverfield Lane, a tangentially related film to Cloverfield (2008) from J.J. Abrams and director Dan Trachtenberg. The sci-fi / thriller hybrid features a tour-de-force performance from its cast, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., and a tense Hitchcockian approach to the conflicts between the main characters locked in a bunker as the world above experiences an unknown calamity. The Grue-crew dissect and discuss the plot, the acting, the directing and…the surprises.

Dave is back with the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment sharing information about Spider-Man’s debut in the latest Captain America: Civil War trailer, the zombies of The Walking Dead setting up residence in Universal Studio’s California theme park and Robert Kirkman’s latest foray into episodic television series with Outcast. In addition, the Grue-Crew announce a new giveaway teaming up with Anchor Bay Entertainment with Fear the Walking Dead The Complete First Season Special Edition.

Eps 151 – The Witch

A24 distributors release the serious horror film The Witch into theaters this past weekend to decent box office and critical praise, for the most part. The Grue-crew are on board to examine the slow-burn thriller that – small spoilers – features…a witch. Is it scary? Is it authentic? Is it any good? Ha! HNR is here to let you know. The film is full of rich atmosphere, great acting, stunning cinematography, creepy music and haunting imagery. Yeah, see it.

Dave launches the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with information about We Go On, Zoombies and Hellraiser. The Grue-crew also dives into the viral marketing promoting 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Eps 149 – Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

The adaptation of the Seth Grahame-Smith parody hit Pride and Prejudice and Zombies stumbles into theaters this weekend making barely a dent in the box office. While the horror-fied version of the Jane Austin classic was a hit with Vixen and Doc Rotten, it did not impress Thomas Mariani and the Black Saint much at all. With Dave stuck in the middle, the discussion gets lively examining the good, the bad and the ugly.

Dave launches the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with information about 10 Cloverfield Lane, John Carpenter and The Exorcist. Also a reminder this week about the forthcoming book from Gruesome Magazine written by the Grue-crew called Gruesome Magazine presents Horror Films from 1980.

Eps 146 – Martyrs

Blumhouse delivers MARTYRS, a remake of the French film of the same name from 2008 from Pascal Laugier – a film that helped usher in the “extreme” genre of European films. Kevin Goetz and Michael Goetz direct the new version from a script by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) with a watered down US slant. As The Black Saint says, the remake has no “balls.” Oh, no.

Dave begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with news about the passing of another beloved legend, Alan Rickman. C’mon 2016, you’re kicking us in the balls here. WTF? Also in the news, we discuss Rocky Horror Picture Show, Deadpool and 10 Cloverfield Lane!
