Eps 183 – I Am Not a Serial Killer (2016)

IFC is distributing one of the most surprising and rewarding independent horror features of the year with I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER. The thoroughly engrossing small but effective film is from director Billy O’Brien featuring Christopher Lloyd, Max Records, and Laura Fraser. The Grue-crew are generally united in their opinion of the film of a young high school kid who may be showing signs of character traits commonly associated with serial killers. When a series of murders plague his small town, the young man investigates who may be behind the killings. And, then, it goes off the rails!

Thomas reviews Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, the latest film from Tim Burton for this week’s edition of What Have You Been Watching. Thomas dives into the complexities of the overwrought story and the lack of originality to all the overactive imagination. Eva Green highlights the cast along with Asa Butterfield and Samual L. Jackson and a large supporting cast of familiar and famous faces.

Dave dives into the Horror News of the Week with Ash vs the Evil Dead, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tale No Tales and Queer Ghost Hunters. Doc and Gruesome Magazine writer Paul Cardullo attended Wreak Havoc Film Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina this late September/early October. The Knoxville Horror Film Festival is coming October 21-23, 2016 in Knoxville, TN. Another announcement for the fall is that Horror News Radio will be at Spooky Empire in Orlando, Florida, October 7 – 9, 2016. Oh, boy! Plan your trip now.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Dave Dreher and Thomas Mariani are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week! Oh, and don’t forget – Stump the Saint! (Brought to you by Gruesome Magazine)

Feature Review: I Am Not a Serial Killer (2016)

The surprisingly genre ingrained low budget thriller I Am Not a Serial Killer sneaks into VOD outlets from IFC. The film from director Billy O’Brien is phenomenal, smart film well worth seeking out and devouring at the earliest convenience. Max Records stars as John Wayne Cleaver, a young man who is diagnosed as a potential sociopath. While battling his own demons, John follows the trail of a killer that has descended on his small town only to discover surprises that are both fascinating and horrifying. Oh, boy!

What Have You Been Watching: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

Tim Burton returns with a book adaptation Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children from author Ransom Riggs. In the film, Asa Butterfield discovers a home for gifted youngsters run by Miss Peregrine (Eva Green). He sides with them to save them from Mr. Barron, the leader of the Wights played by Samuel L. Jackson. While the film did respectable at this weekend’s box office, it failed to register with HNR’s very own Thomas Mariani who shares his suffering and dwindling admiration for director Tim Burton. Eps 135 – Ash vs the Evil Dead

After years of horror movie fans demanding that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell return to the Evil Dead franchise, fan-favorites characters and Deadites return – but this time to the small screen – with the coming of Ash vs the Evil Dead available for 10 weekly episodes on Starz. Can the demented duo recapture lightning in the bottle? What will Ash Williams be like 30 years after Army of Darkness? The Grue-crew are here to share their reviews of the pilot episode, “El Jefe.”

Dave begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with news about Nightmare Cinema, Preachers and Halloween Costumes. In the What Have You Been Watching segment Doc Rotten & The Black Saint from the Grue-Crew review Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.

sian davis (as mrs. johnson) - episode 101

Review: Ash vs the Evil Dead – Episode 1 “El Jefe” (2015)

It is rare that a film properly translates so marvelously to the small screen – although, of late, the odds are improving – as Ash vs the Evil Dead manages to accomplish. Sam Raimi returns to write and direct the first episode, El Jefe. In the pilot’s 30 minute premiere, Raimi re-introduces Ash Williams, once again played by Bruce Campbell, as the protector of the Book of the Dead. Campbell slides back into the Ash role with relish and charm – only 30 years later. It is amaze-balls. The Grue-crew champion the show but worry slightly if the remaining nine episodes can keep up the pace and tone.

What Have You Been Watching: Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

In shocking news, the horror film Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse bombed at the box office with its Halloween release not even cracking the top 10 for the weekend. How does this happen? A lot of it has to do with the release program the distributor set up with a quick lead from theaters to VOD, leading to many theater chains not showing the film. The result is quite unfair to the film as both Doc and The Black Saint praise the film for its comedy and its charming – but insanely gory – coming of age story.

Eps 132 – The Final Girls – The Walking Dead

The surprisingly original and heart-felt horror satire The Final Girls hits VOD this week. It may be must-see movie magic from director Todd Strauss-Schulson.

Review: The Final Girls (2015)

The premise for The Final Girls has its young star Taissa Farmiga traveling into the horror film that stars her deceased mother, Malin Akerman. Taissa and her friends must survive the movie to escape and return to the real world. The film makes good on its meta themes and goes well beyond that promise along by making the internal conflict of its lead strong, heartfelt and emotional. In a rare turn, the entire Grue-crew agree, making The Final Girls a must-see winner of 2015.

Review: Jessabelle (2014)

The only thing that the grue-crew can agree upon in this week’s horror release Jessabelle is that Sarah Snook makes an impression with the character driven horror film set in the deep south. The Black Saint suggests it is better suited for the Lifetime channel finding very little that is scary or interesting while Doc, Vixen and Dave all seem to like the film quite a bit. Sound the bell, it HNR-nite fights!

Review: Interstellar (2014)

Matthew McConaughy joins Anne Hathaway and Wes Bentley to explore deep space in hopes to save humanity in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. The Black Saint and Thomas Mariani discuss the film’s sound design, spectacular special effects and emotional human drama. Even though it may not be Nolan’s best film, Interstellar is still a film to seek out and enjoy.

What Have You Been Watching:  Over the Garden Wall

The Cartoon Network astounds Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint with its 10 episode animated min-series Over the Garden Wall. The vocal talent is extraordinary and the execution is surprisingly emotional and bent. Thomas and The Black Saint recommend the miniseries with The Black Saint suggesting it would make a terrific film with the 10 episode consumed in one showing.

Horror News of the Week for 11/10/2014

Dave returns to bring you the Horror News of the Week with news of Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and the Evil Dead making the leap to cable television with Ash vs. the Evil Dead heading to Starz. The Walking Dead barely slipped by controversy as this week’s episode was nearly heavily censored. There is a documentary heading our way about legendary producer Debra Hill. Human Centipede 3 begins to market the film with a sound bite. Dario Argento is after funding for his next horror epic The Sandman.
