Review: The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (2014)

The final film in The Hobbit trilogy picks up directly where The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug left off with the dragon hammering down on Lake Town where Luke Evans takes down the beast. But his victory comes too late, and the townsfolk follow him to the foot of The Lonely Mountain where Thorin suffers from “dragon sickness” guarding his treasure. Before it all ends, there are orcs, goblins, a dwarf prince on a giant pig, elves, bats, mountain worms and – to The Black Saint’s surprise and elation – large eagles dropping bears into the battle.

Check it out with Thomas’ highest recommendation.

00:03:40 – Review of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Every year, for his birthday, Horror News Radio host Santos Ellin Jr., the Black Saint, goes to see the big theatrical release of that weekend. Again this year, that film is another film in the trilogy of The Hobbit movies, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. And just like last  year, Santos gets a good nap. What? Yes, the adventures of the wandering Hobbit put your favorite New York podcast host to sleep. Sigh. On the other side, Doc shares his love for the film, the 3D and the high frame rate experience while Thomas counters most everything Doc loves. Still, everyone agrees the film has its moments, including the incredible execution of the dragon Smaug. But, that ending. Woof!

01:04:44 – Horror News of the Week for 12/16/2013
Dave jumps into the mix to bring the Horror News of the Week. He begins with news about the viral promotional materials for the upcoming second season of The Following starring Kevin Bacon. It seems Stephen King has another book coming out on the heels of Doctor Sleep, titled Mr. Mercedes. There’s also another TV show in the works: Grand Central. There’s a new online VOD service called Horror Inc. that Dave recommends checking out. The trailer for John Schneider’s all star horror slasher film Smothered is now available. The 26th episode of The ABCs of Death 2 has been chosen, giving director Robert Boocheck the coveted spot in the film with M is for Masticate.
