Eps 154 – 10 Cloverfield Lane

Seemingly out of nowhere Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures released 10 Cloverfield Lane, a tangentially related film to Cloverfield (2008) from J.J. Abrams and director Dan Trachtenberg. The sci-fi / thriller hybrid features a tour-de-force performance from its cast, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., and a tense Hitchcockian approach to the conflicts between the main characters locked in a bunker as the world above experiences an unknown calamity. The Grue-crew dissect and discuss the plot, the acting, the directing and…the surprises.

Dave is back with the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment sharing information about Spider-Man’s debut in the latest Captain America: Civil War trailer, the zombies of The Walking Dead setting up residence in Universal Studio’s California theme park and Robert Kirkman’s latest foray into episodic television series with Outcast. In addition, the Grue-Crew announce a new giveaway teaming up with Anchor Bay Entertainment with Fear the Walking Dead The Complete First Season Special Edition.

AMC’S ORIGINAL SERIES
FEAR THE WALKING DEAD:
THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON
SPECIAL EDITION
ARRIVES ON BLU-RAY™ AND DVD

ON MARCH 22, 2016, THE 2-DISC BLU-RAY + DIGITAL HD AND DVD SETS CONTAIN INCREDIBLE NEW BONUS FEATURES PLUS ALL SIX CHILLING AND EXHILARATING EPISODES

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – (January 20, 2016) – Following an initial release this past December, Anchor Bay Entertainment announced today the latest inventive and heart-racing AMC original series “Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season” arrives on SPECIAL EDITION on March 22, 2016. Created by Robert Kirkman (“The Walking Dead”) and Dave Erickson (“Sons of Anarchy”), “Fear the Walking Dead”, premiered in August as the #1 show in cable history. These 2-disc sets with collectible lenticular packaging include hours of bonus content including 5 deleted scenes, 7 newly produced featurettes and audio commentaries on every episode.

Living in the same universe as “The Walking Dead”, “Fear the Walking Dead” is a gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in Los Angeles, a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark (Kim Dickens, Gone Girl) and English teacher Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis, “Missing”) have managed to assemble. The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and the dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.

“Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season” cast also includes Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince), Mercedes Mason (Quarantine 2), Ruben Blades (Safe House), Alycia Debnam-Carey (The Devil’s Hand), Elizabeth Rodriguez (“Orange Is the New Black”) and Lorenzo James Henrie (“Star Trek”).

“Fear The Walking Dead” Season 2 premieres April 10, 2016 on AMC with 15 new episodes.

“Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season” will be available on Blu-ray + Digital HD and DVD from Anchor Bay Entertainment on March 22, 2016 for the suggested retail price of $59.99 and $49.98 respectively, and includes the below bonus features:

Eps 126 – Final Girl – Cub

Abigail Breslin and Wes Bentley star in FINAL GIRL from director Tyler Shields as a pair of mysterious outlaws who focus their attention on a band of murderous maniacs preying on helpless young women. It is one bad ass chick against four insane psychopaths as Breslin proves you don’t want to mess with the … final girl.

R.I.P. In the What Have You Been Watching block the Norwegian film Cub grabs the everyone’s attention while Joseph Perry returns with two reviews from the BiFan Internation Film Festival: Turbo Kid and Deathgasm.

Review: Final Girl (2015)

Dave Dreher says it best during the podcast review, “Somewhere in this mess is a great story.” Final Girl featuring Abigail Breslin, Wes Bentley, Alexander Ludwig and Logan Huffman attempts to build something uniquely interesting, but – to quote Dave once again – “fails miserably.” The Grue-Crew hack and slash away at the film questioning the dialog, the lighting, the logic and – with all due apologies – Wes Bentley. Check out the review, we will give you a five minute head start.

What Have You Been Watching: Cub (2015)

Originally titled Welp, the Norwegian film dubbed Cub in the States follows the story of young Sam, a troubled cub scout on a camping trip with his troupe. Once at the camp ground, Sam discovers the legend of Kai may very well be true when he encounters a feral young boy hiding – and killing – in the woods. The Grue-Crew recommend the film for its imagination, ballsy attitude, creative traps and its young star, Maurice Luijten.

Review: Sinister 2 (2015)

While the first Sinister was a surprise his, the follow-up effort, SINISTER 2, from Ciaran Foy struggles to recapture the thrills and chills of the first film. For The Black Saint suffers another round of “Blumhouse strikes again” sharing a strong negative reaction to the film. Thomas, Doc and Vixen are a little more warm to the sequel. James Ransone and Shannyn Sossamon provide the film with strong performances while the first film’s director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill craft a script that gives the film too much of a good thing watering down the mystery of the film’s antagonist, Bughuul.
