EPS 169 – The Shallows

Not many shark films can stand beside Jaws as a great film featuring a killer great white or his finned friends. The Grue-crew wade out to the theaters this weekend to determine if THE SHALLOWS from director Jaume Collet-Serra can claim one of those coveted positions. All indications are that Blake Lively and cinematographer Flavio Martínez Labiano have succeeded where many have failed with a tight taunt thriller.

Thomas chimes in with a thoughtful review of NEON DEMON from acclaimed director Nicolas Winding Refn featuring Elle Fanning as a young model who quickly becomes a threat…and pays the price. Dave takes charge with this latest edition of Horror News of the Weeks featuring tidbits about the trailer for Ouija: Origin of Evil, Universal looking to cast The Rock in The Wolfman and Ghostbusters calls in a retooling of their theme song for this summer’s blockbuster remake.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Dave DreherThomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week! Oh, and don’t forget – Stump the Saint! Eps 119 – The Gallows – SDCC 2015

“You’ve been BLUM-ED!” The Black Saint coins a new phrase sharing his “love” for all things Blumhouse, breaking Doc’s heart in the process. THE GALLOWS gets strung up by its “Buster Browns” this week as the HNR grue-crew tear it apart. Oh, my, it is true- found footage has seen better days…

Dave dishes a new plate of HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK with the news from SDCC from Ash vs the Evil Dead to Hannibal to Tales of Halloween.

Review: The Gallows (2015)

Despite looking forward to seeing THE GALLOWS and hoping to enjoy another found footage theatrical release, even Doc Rotten is appalled by what crawled up onto the big screen and took a giant dump. Ugh. Thomas proclaims The Gallows the worst film of 2015. The Black Saint even thinks it out-stinks Area 51. It is a sad day at HNR. You are going to want to hear this one.

Review: Terminator: Genisys (2015)

Some hate it, some love it. And it is no different with the grue-crew as Santos & Thomas face off against Doc & Vixen while discussing TERMINATOR: GENISYS. Every WTF moment is discussed and every time travelling trip dissected. But what this hell is up with Matt Smith? And does it even matter? The debate is one determining if the fifth Terminator film is a summer blockbuster or an over-hyped fan-fiction film. You decide!

Eps 116 – The Nightmare – Scares that Care

The Grue-crew climb into the dreamlike world of Rodney Ascher’s documentary about sleep paralysis, THE NIGHTMARE (2015). Following a small group of subjects relating their experiences of horrifying nightmares and being frozen in their beds, unable to move, unable to scream, sometimes unable to breathe. Paired with this are a series of reenactments that are, at times, as scary as any horror film.

Dave dishes a new plate of HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK with the news about NBC’s Hannibal, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Cobragator. Yes, Cobragator! Thomas and The Black Saint dive into the Pixar film Inside Out in the What Have You Been Watching segment. Review: The Nightmare (2015)

The synopsis is simple, “A look at a frightening condition that plagues thousands; sleep paralysis.” and so is the approach to tackling a fairly complicated subject matter. For THE NIGHTMARE, director Rodney Ascher sticks to sharing the experiences of a small gathering of poor souls who each suffer from sleep paralysis and horrifying nightmares. The Grue-crew chime in with their reactions to this unique and challenging genre documentary.

What Have You Been Watching: Inside Out

Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint plead with horror fans to take a look at Pixar’s latest film regardless of the fact it is far from horror. They both proclaim the animated feature, INSIDE OUT, to be the best film of 2015 thus far. Listen to why.

Eps 42 – Devil’s Due

Devil’s Due not only tries to bring on the apocalypse, the end of the world as we know it, but it also tries to kill off the entire found footage sub-genre. It is so god-awful, it has Thomas in fumes and Santos ranting and Doc nearly in tears, weeping for his beloved cinema-verite. Oh, the horror!

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, two members of the group Radio Silence, bring their promising talent to the exorcism/Rosemary’s-Baby films. But instead of expanding on the promise they displayed in the final chapter of VHS, “10/31/98,” they rely too heavily on the tricks found in that short stretched out to fill the 90 minutes of Devil’s Due.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher,  and Thomas Mariani rake Devil’s Due over the coals, tearing it apart frame by frame, sequence by sequence. Thankfully, Dave Dreher is here tonight to bring the Horror News of the Week and give the grue-crew some hope for better things: HannibalRavenous and The Quiet Ones.

00:04:15 – Devil’s Due
January is often the dumping ground of weak-ass horror and genre films. Recently, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones shows some promise this year may be different (Sorry, Santos), but this week’s release, Devil’s Due makes it hard to argue against this idea. Sigh. The entire cast of HNR are unimpressed with the first full length feature from the guys known as Radio Silence. Devil’s Due is a disaster, but it provides plenty to talk about, no doubt.

00:40:17 – Horror News of the Week for 01/20/2014
Dave Dreher steps in to bring the Horror News of the Weeks starting off with fantastic casting news: Katherine Isabelle is joining the cast of the hit NBC spring TV show Hannibal. Yay! Both Fear Clinic and Cooties pick up distribution deals giving horror fans two promising horror films to look forward to. The teaser for Hammer Film’s The Quiet Ones promises some spectacular ghostly goodness. Scream Factory is in the news – again! – with the announcement of the upcoming Ravenous (1999) Blu-Ray release. And more news is abound for The Conjuring spin-off featuring the Annabelle doll.
