Eps 141 – Worst Horror Films of 2015

It is that time of year once again where the Grue-crew take a look back at the past twelve months, beginning with the Worst Horror Films of 2015. The Black Saint, Dave Dreher, Thomas Mariani and Doc Rotten each compile their list of the genre films that left them miffed during this past year. The Black Saint gets ample opportunity to explain he’s been “Blum’d” while Dave reluctantly disses some film he was looking forward to but failed to impress. Thomas goes after some Hollywood heavy weights, low-budget offerings and an anime-turned-live-action Japanese feature while Doc — well — makes a few controversial choices.

Dave begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with news about a 4K restoration of the 1979 classic Phantasm, the first look at the new ToHo Godzilla: Resurgence and the first trailer from Summer 2016’s sci-fi feature Independence Day: Resurgence. In the What Have You Been Watching segment, the Grue-crew cover a Black Saint recommended film Dead Body.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Dave DreherThomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week! Oh, and don’t forget – Stump the Saint! Review: Harbinger Down (2015)

HARBINGER DOWN represents a love for bringing practical effects to the big screen, a hands-on physical thing leaving CGI far behind. Effects artists Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alex Gillis, from StudioADI – Academy Award winners for Death Becomes Her and famous for their work on Starship Troopers and Alien films – craft a horror tale where an alien infects a ship trapped in icy waters. The film wears its influences out in the open from Alien to The Thing to The Blob and more. The cringe as they find the effects noteworthy but the script, direction and even the acting – aside from Lance Henriksen – lacking.

copcar

What Have You Been Watching: Cop Car (2015)

Thomas steps up to discuss the thriller Cop Car from the future Spider-Man director Jon Watts. The film pits a corrupt lawman, Kevin Bacon, against a pair of rebellious kids who take off with Bacon’s police car. Thomas recommends the film, not only as a primer for the director and his next high-profile project, but as a competent and exciting film all on its own. And, everything is better with a little Bacon in it, right!

Goodnight-Mommy

Festival Report: BiFan (2015) w/ Cub & Goodnight Mommy

International HNR Reported Joseph Perry returns with another BiFan International Film Festival update featuring reviews of two more extraordinary horror movies. This week he digs into Jonas Govaerts’ film Cub – also known as Welp – where a 12-year old scout encounters a monster in the woods. He also shares his opinion of the frightening thriller from Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, Goodnight Mommy.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt headline the sci-fi epic from director Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow, fascinating and thrilling the HNR crew in the process. Well, except Dave who did not get to see it and Santos who was not satisfied with the ending in the slightest. Live. Die. Repeat.
