Eps 143 – The Best Horror Films of 2015

This is it, the final episode of 2015 and what better topic to discuss than The Best Horror Films of 2015. Doc, Dave, The Black Saint and Thomas compile their top horror films of the past 12 months and discuss what they loved about them as each dives into their list. A number of films appear on many of the lists – The Final Girls, It Follows and Krampus – while each list has its share of unique treasures and controversial additions. The Black Saint is relieved there is no mention of Area 51.

Dave begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with news about the passing of Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead, the troubles of Rob Zombie getting NC-17 rating for his next flick 31 and the reveal of Benedict Cumberbatch as Marvel’s Doctor Strange. In the What Have You Been Watching segment, Doc Rotten finally reviews the “controversial” film Big Game.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Dave DreherThomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week! Oh, and don’t forget – Stump the Saint! Review: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

The HNR grue-crew climb aboard Furiosa’s War Machine and speed headlong toward Valhalla screaming the praise of Mad Max: Fury Road. Well, most of the crew, anyways. Doc decides to start the new church of Fury Road while The Black Saint struggles with the plot and character. It’s an exciting – and heated – discussion about the fourth Mad Max movie and George Miller’s crowning achievement in film. Christopher gives the film 500 miles an hour out of 5. Wowzers!

Festival Report: Crimson Screen Horror Film Festival

The HNR grue-crew start off the segment congratulating guest-host Christopher G. Moore on his Best Screen play win at the Crimson Screen Horror Film Festival, as well as taking home Best Director at the Killuride Film Festival the same weekend. Christopher shares his experience at the show with highlights and praise while Doc gets downright angry at the screening of Headless. Oh, my. Disengaged also won for best effects (Mariah Johnson w/ Angela Pritchett) at Killuride.

What Have You Been Watching: The Atticus Institute (2015)

Seemingly out of nowhere comes a small, independent found footage possession thriller called The Atticus Institute. The film is far better than most of the wretched garbage that gets dumped into the theaters in January and yet it is relegated to VOD and DVD. This film is a rare treat, a movie that treats its subject matter with imagination and respect creating a thrilling and engaging horror tale. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten both join in to champion this early 2015 favorite.

Doc steps in to bring you the Horror News of the Week with news of X-Files making a return to Fox. Hannibal is pushed back to Summer but adds kick-ass cast members. Scream Queens also adds a few new names to its cast, a little less kick-ass. A teacher in Ohio is convicted of a felony for showing ABCs of Death to her students. The makers of World War Z II promise a completely different tale.

Eps 68 – The Purge: Anarchy

The Purge: Anarchy (2014) picks up one year after the Purge presented last year except this entry follows Frank Grillo as Seargent Leo Barnes, a man on a mission to purge but runs into two sets of characters in deep doo doo deciding to help them survive the night. Capitalizing on the premise of The Purge, Anarchy takes the action to the streets to the satisfaction of the fans but forgets to bring characterization along with it. Hollow? Maybe. Action packed? You bet. Check out the review from the HNR grue-crew.

Dave ramps up the horror news of the week with bloody bits and pieces about GrizzlyThe Overlook Motel and Mad Max Fury Road. Joseph Perry is now the HNR man-on-the-street in South Korea at the PiFan film festival with his reviews of Dead Snow Red vs Dead, Blood Glacier and other genre films.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher, Thomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week!  The show also contains Stump the Stain as recorded live at MonsterCon toy and comic convention in Greenville, South Carolina July 18-20, 2014.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
Thomas reminds his co-hosts that all but Vixen hated on The Purge last year giving the film a screaming 1 out of 5 before the grue-crew jump into their review of the its 2014 sequel, The Purge: Anarchy. Dave perhaps says it the best, “For a film with ‘Anarchy’ in its title, where is all the Anarchy?” Frank Castle…uh…Frank Grillo, rather, takes to the streets on Purge Night handing out violence, gore and death, but does the action hold enough interest to elevate the film and the now successful franchise.

What Have You Been Watching: PiFan by Joseph Perry
From South Korea, attending the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, Horror News Radio man-on-the-street reported Joseph Perry brings short reviews from a handful of genre films presented early in the festival: Dead Snow: Dead Vs RedWhat We Do in the Shadows, Blood Glacier (The Station), Darkness by Day, When Animals Dream, Djinn   Zero Theorem.

Horror News of the Week for 07/21/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news of the death of writer/director John Fasano, the man behind Rock ‘n’ Roll Nightmare and Black Roses. We are finally treated with images from the forthcoming George Miller apocalyptic thriller Mad Max Fury Road. The new trailer for Grizzly is NOT a remake of the 1976 b-movie classic, but a new nature horror film from director David Hackl and stars James Marsden, Thomas Jane and Billy Bob Thornton. In Stephen King news, Mark Romanek is now attached to direct a prequel to The Shining titled The Overlook Hotel. Effects artist Vincent Guastini has released photos and a trailer for his segment from anthology horror film Hellivator Man.
