Into the Storm (2014)
Director Steven Quale (Final Destination 5) returns to direct Into the Storm which is a blend of found footage, traditional disaster flick and a family drama that wears its similarities with Twister on its sleeve. Even Santos catches the direct reference to the Nineties classic as a giant artificial cow flies by. “We’ve got cows!” The grue-crew dive into the film tearing it a new one for its weak script while praising the special effects and its dumb-fun pacing.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Director Matt Reeves accomplishes with the sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes what most other sequels never even approach, he makes a better film. Empires Strikes Back, The Godfather II, the list that includes these films is incredibly short. To no one’s surprise, Doc, Dave, Santos, Thomas and Vixen all praise the film for its remarkable effects, it’s incredible performance from Andy Sirkis and it’s deceptively simple story that is thoroughly engrossing, compelling and fascinating. Check out this great discussion.

Horror News of the Week for 07/14/2014
Dave Dreher  shares the Horror News of the Week beginning with news the first teaser trailer from Alex Aja’s adaptation of Joe Hill’s Horns. Thomas chimes in with his opinions on the hit FX television adaptation of The Strain from Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and showrunner Carlton Cuse. Thomas provides a mixed review harping on the weak character development but enjoying the more graphic horror elements. Santos pretty much poops on the whole show while Doc suggests everyone listen to he and Dave reviewing each episode on the Horror News TV The Strain Fan Podcast.

Eps 64 – The Human Race – Game of Thrones

The Human Race (2013) from director Paul Hough spins a combination of Battle Royale and Saw on its ears creating a terrifying tale that has Santos Ellin Jr. and Vixen singing its praises while Doc and Thomas are far less impressed. Kudos to Eddie McGee for portraying a complex heroic character. “Run or Die!”

Doc steps in for Dave this week to bring the news of the week with Robert Englund (returning as Freddy Kruger for one night only) , Paranormal Activity 5 and Z Nation while Thomas revisits season four of  Game of Thrones in this week’s What  Have  You Been Watching segment. The Human Race (2014)
“If you are lapped twice, you die. If you step off the path, you die. If you touch the grass, you will die!” The tag line sets up the story at its base, 80 strangers from a single city block are transported to a mysterious track where they must keep running to survive. The Human Race thrills Santos and Vixen with its gory thrills (exploding heads!) and interesting characters while Thomas is frustrated by the script, the redundant kills and the overplayed soundtrack. The HNR grue-crew go at, love it or hate it, the discussion is lively.

Thomas is all about season 4 of Game of Thrones as he and Doc revisit the highlights of the year. Doc is all about “The Mountain and the Viper” as Santos watches the scene in the background for the very first time. OMG! Oh, the bloody gore of it all. While Game of Thrones gets high praises, the season 7 premiere of True Blood gets a far less enthusiastic review from Doc.

00:04:00 – Review of Ender’s Game (2013)
The grue-crew venture into Sci-Fi territory this week as they review Ender’s Game from Gavin Hood. It does have aliens – well, almost. It does have bloodshed – uh, no, not really. Gasp, the horror in Ender’s Game is the realization of the effects of Harrison Ford’s character’s manipulation of the young cast. It is devastating, an emotional hit to the gut. While Dave zoned out pretty quickly, Doc and Vixen generally liked it while both Santos and Thomas had stronger issues.

00:47:56 – What Have You Been Watching: Dave meets Robert Englund
Dave was fortunate to attend a special Halloween event at Robert Kurtzman’s Mad FX Studio to support his school the Kurtzman Institute of Art. The guest of honor was Robert Englund the talented madman who plays Freddy Kruger – and is featured in over 140 films. Dave shares the event and his meeting of the modern horror icon.

00:52.31– Horror News of the Week for 11/04/2013
Dave rocks the horror news of the week beginning with news that Samuel L. Jackson has joined fellow 1408 co-star John Cusack for the screen adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell to be directed by Paranormal Activity 2’s Tod Williams. A pair of directors are up next with George Romero commenting about the lack of zombies in The Walking Dead and David Cronenberg cutting Stanley Kubrick below the knees for the lack of horror in The Shining. Thomas is not terribly interested in hearing about Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno which had footage premiere this week. Michael Biehn finally released a trailer for his film Hidden in the Woods that is truly disturbing. And the Archie comics are going un-dead with Afterlife with Archie.
