The Dark Universe is upon us and thing ain’t looking too bright, sadly. THE MUMMY reboot of the Universal Monster franchise has finally arrived and the Grue-Crew is here to discuss the results. The lukewarm box office and piss-poor reviews are signs enough for what the Crew will share; however, award winning director Christopher G. Moore joins the crew this week to share his …love… for the film. Oh, dear. For the WHYBW segment, the Grue-Crew explore the A24 independent film release IT COMES AT NIGHT with a careful and critical eye. The film is catching flack for its marketing, Thomas insists to look at it without that issue in mind. Dave drops into the Horror News of the Week with the sad news of the loss of Adam West, the 1966 Batman himself. Other news includes the new Black Panther trailer and upcoming games from E3 2017 such as Transference from Spectravision.  Closing out the show Thomas and Santos participate in a battle of wits with this week’s Stump the Saint!

The Void (2017) – Episode 209 – Horror News Radio

For our special anniversary episode of Horror News Radio, the Grue-Crew scoured and scraped for a film worth to be included. They found the film they were looking for in the film THE VOID from directors Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski. The film unfolds like a classic gore-fest from the Eighties complete with gruesome practical effects and splatter galore. The film is swimming in crimson goo with monsters and mayhem around every dimly lit corner. Ah! A match made in heaven…or…it that elsewhere….?

This episode marks four years since the Grue-Crew first gathered to record the podcast, featuring a review of the Evil Dead remake. A few fans sent in questions and congratulations – and there may a familiar voice heard among them. In the What Have You Been Watching segment David and Doc discuss the season finale of The Walking Dead and the surprising turn of events in Bates Motel.

Dave pilots this week’s edition of Horror News of the Week with a round up of recent trailers from It to Annabelle: Creation to The Mummy. HNR and Gruesome Magazine are heading to a number of horror conventions and film festival in the coming months Crimson Screen Horror Film Festival in May to Dragon Con in September.

Feature Review: The Void (2017)

The Black Saint says it best that The Void draws upon the classics in the genre: Hellraiser, John Carpenter’s The Thing, even Halloween II and many others. But, as Thomas agrees, it doesn’t do so to simply reference or homage those classics. The film uses those concepts to build into its own unique and bloody narrative. It is a treat for horror fans, especially those who remember watching classics from the local Mom and Pop VHS shop. Aaron Poole leads the cast which features Ellen Wong, Kathleen Munroe, Kenneth Walsh, Amy Groening, Evan Stern, Stephanie Belding, and Art Hindle. A must see!

What Have You Been Watching: The Walking Dead Season 7 Finale (2017)

Dave Dreher and Doc Rotten reflect on the Seventh season of The Walking Dead as the season finale airs. The expected grand extravaganza ended up being a bit of a whimper as the drop in ratings illustrates. The finale had a moment or two – mostly surrounding Negan – but the end result was a bit of an anticlimactic let down. Dave and Doc quickly turn their attention to the far more successful but no less controversial recent episodes of Bates Motel that weave Marion Crane (Rihanna) into the TV version. For Dave and Doc the variation on the classic “shower scene” was a season highlight while many across the internet have been panning the choice. Regardless, the performances from Eddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga are extraordinary.

Eps 192 – Incarnate – Westworld

Crawling into theaters this past weekend, the latest horror film from Blumhouse fails to make a dent in the box office. The possession fueled “exorcise” in futility, INCARNATE, features a decent cast — Aaron Eckhart, David Mazouz (Gotham), Emjay Anthony (Krampus), Catalina Sandino Moreno — and is directed by Brad Peyton. The film starts off with an interesting idea of “evicting” demons from the minds of their hosts instead of exorcising them. Interesting. But it takes more than that to impress the Grue-crew.

A far more impressive endeavor comes from HBO in the form of the WESTWORLD which wrapped its first season. Taking the conventions proposed in the 1973 film and the novel from Michael Crichton, show creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy expand on the themes and implication in spectacular fashion. The cast is amazing and the twists and turns are sensational and surprising. Thandie Newton and Jeffrey Wright provide award worthy, gripping performances that outstage the likes of Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris – each of whom are more invested here than in recent roles. Thomas and Doc share their thoughts on the season and all the shocking developments.

Doc guides the Horror News of the Week with sad news of the passing of Don Calfa who played Ernie in Return of the Living Dead.  The crew also discuss trailers, trailers and more trailers from The Mummy to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. And Doc is set to visit the Walker Stalker Charlotte convention December 17 & 18, 2016 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Feature Review: Incarnate (2016)

Typically a champion of the films from Blumhouse, even Doc has trouble praising and recommended the uninspiring mess that is INCARNATE. At the core, the film from director Brad Payton, has a fascinating concept but the story from Ronnie Christensen struggles to do much interesting with the plot. Aaron Eckhart blunders through the film with a performance that suggest he may hope that the audience thinks it is actually Thomas Jane in the role, forgetting that he himself is involved at all. The age difference of the young stars, David Mazouz amd Emjay Anthony, from their recent roles in Gotham and Krampus expose that the film has been sitting on a shelf somewhere. The Grue-crew suggest you may hear about this film again next week when they recount their worst horror films of 2016. Uh, oh.

What Have You Been Watching: Westworld Season 1 (2016)

HBO proves that some material can be improved upon. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy mold the concepts from the Westworld film into a cerebral and visceral exercise in excitement and ingenuity. WESTWORLD explore the weighty theme of creation and consciousness as the hosts struggle to understand their own purpose in the world around them. What is real, what is imagined. What is freedom and what is spirit. What is the definition of “alive.” Jeffrey Wright stars as Benard a programmer in charge of managing the “mental” state of the hosts of the park known as Westworld. A park where guests interact with lifelike robots with unique AI and participate in complicated storylines full of sex, murder and mayhem. Thandie Newton is Maeve, a host who becomes self aware and begins a quest to escape the park. Anthony Hopkins comes to life as Robert Ford, the man behind the park, the man who creates the stories, creates the hosts, and pulls all the strings. Ed Harris is the “man in black” looking for the maze, hoping to learn the secrets of Westworld. Doc and Thomas heap a mountain of praise on the show, looking forward to season two.

Eps 147 – The Boy

This week on Horror News Radio we try to follow Brahms’ rules as we babysit The Boy. Lauren Cohan steps out of the dangerous world of The Walking Dead to become a nanny in England looking after an 8 year old boy, except that boy turns out to be a life-sizes porcelain doll. The grue-crew are initially delighted as she begins to suspect there is more to the doll, to Brahms, fearing a spirit may actually reside within the creepy bastard. Things really perk up when she successfully convinces Malcolm (Rupert Evans) of her suspicions. Then…well…then…the third act arrives and the grue-crew are livid. Found out why!

Dave begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with information about The Exorcist coming to FOX as an episode television show, Universal’s The Mummy gaining a star in Tom Cruise and The Joker making an impression (as does Harley Quinn) with the latest Suicide Squad trailer. Also announced this week is the forthcoming book from Gruesome Magazine written by the Grue-crew called Gruesome Magazine presents Horror Films from 1980.
