Eps 133 – Crimson Peak – Goosebumps

Guillermo del Toro returns to theaters with his Gothic romance horror ghost story masterpiece Crimson Peak. Visually the film is flawless, exquisite, lush and majestic. The story leaves some of the Grue-crew wondering where all the ghosts are. It is a divisive week on HNR. We know there’s something amiss when Vixen has to hide her eyes only once during the film.

Dave begins the HORROR NEWS OF THE WEEK segment with news about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Walking Dead and Night of the Living Dead. One of these is not like the others. In the What Have You Been Watching segment the Grue-Crew review Goosebumps. Ermahgerd!

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Dave DreherThomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week! Oh, and don’t forget – Stump the Saint! Review: Crimson Peak (2015)

Perhaps the most anticipated horror film of 2015, Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak is striking. The film aims for a very specific look and atmosphere achieving it with ease and confidence. The film struggles at the box office, sadly, because the marketing sold the movie as a full-fledged ghost movie. But, like Edith Cushing states early in the film, it’s a story that has ghosts in it. The result is pure Guillermo del Toro, mixing classic structure with modern cinematography. This week the Grue-crew share their reviews of Crimson Peak.

What Have You Been Watching: Goosebumps (2015)

Jack Black leads the cast in Rob Letterman’s Goosebumps that peels back the covers of the fan-favorite horror book series for young readers. All the classic monsters are here led by the notorious and chilling Slappy the Dummy. The main creatures include the Yeti, the Wolfman and a gaggle of angry yard Gnomes. The film is fast, fun and family friendly – a great introduction to young film goers to the world of horror cinema. The Grue-crew have a blast reviewing Goosebumps.

Horror News of the Week for 10/19/2015

Dave shares the Horror News of the Week starts off with the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Sean Cunningham, Kane Hodder and Tom Savini have all lent their names and input to various aspects of the upcoming Friday the 13th video game currently seeking financing through crowdfunding. On TV this week, Carol kicks major ass on this week’s episode of The Walking Dead in what Thomas calls “The best episode of the series.” Could this be? George Romero is planning on releasing another addition of the classic Night of the Living Dead except this one has recently re-discover LOST FOOTAGE. On New Discovery American, Ralph Sarchie is leading the monster-fighting charge on The Demon Files.

Review: What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

No surprise here: Dave, Thomas and Doc all sing praises for the vampire horror comedy What We Do In The Shadows. The grue-crew dive into what makes this film hit the high moments with laughs and silly fun. Thomas spotlights co-director Jemain Clement in the role of Vladislav while Doc appreciates the understated comedy of Stu (as played by Stuart Rutherford). David, of course, adores the Nosferatu look and feel of the elder vampire, Petyr. Find out why you should see this film.

Review: Kingsman The Secret Service (2015)

Colin Firth kills it as the suave but deadly Harry Hart in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman The Secret Service as they take a satiric stab at every concept buried in the tropes of James Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer. Doc has admiration for Gazelle as played by Sofia Boutella. Thomas patiently waits for Doc to finish stammering about the effects and the comedy to discuss Samuel L. Jackson as the film’s villain, the billionaire named Valentine.

Dave shares the Horror News of the Week with news about the trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak. Ignoring the fact that the film came out fifteen years ago, director Russ Gomm brings a documentary about The Blair Witch Project to screens and film festivals in 2015. On the sequel front, the producers behind the upcoming Friday the 13th sequel discuss how the script will tackle the supernatural underpinnings to Jason Voorhees. James Franco headlines Stephen King’s 11/22/63. Who make up the new supergroup The Hollywood Vampires? Why Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and…Johnny Depp.

What Have You Been Watching: The Atticus Institute (2015)

Seemingly out of nowhere comes a small, independent found footage possession thriller called The Atticus Institute. The film is far better than most of the wretched garbage that gets dumped into the theaters in January and yet it is relegated to VOD and DVD. This film is a rare treat, a movie that treats its subject matter with imagination and respect creating a thrilling and engaging horror tale. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten both join in to champion this early 2015 favorite.
