Review: Ash vs the Evil Dead – Episode 1 “El Jefe” (2015)

It is rare that a film properly translates so marvelously to the small screen – although, of late, the odds are improving – as Ash vs the Evil Dead manages to accomplish. Sam Raimi returns to write and direct the first episode, El Jefe. In the pilot’s 30 minute premiere, Raimi re-introduces Ash Williams, once again played by Bruce Campbell, as the protector of the Book of the Dead. Campbell slides back into the Ash role with relish and charm – only 30 years later. It is amaze-balls. The Grue-crew champion the show but worry slightly if the remaining nine episodes can keep up the pace and tone.

What Have You Been Watching: Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

In shocking news, the horror film Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse bombed at the box office with its Halloween release not even cracking the top 10 for the weekend. How does this happen? A lot of it has to do with the release program the distributor set up with a quick lead from theaters to VOD, leading to many theater chains not showing the film. The result is quite unfair to the film as both Doc and The Black Saint praise the film for its comedy and its charming – but insanely gory – coming of age story.

Horror News of the Week for 11/02/2015

Dave shares the Horror News of the Week starts off a lively discussion about what the hell is up with the poor cinematic showing for horror films this Halloween (2015). Thomas steps in with a recap of his visit to Halloween Horror Nights. The news begins with the Halloween costume make-up master Rick Baker created for his daughter. The Preacher trailer premiered on the fourth episode of The Walking Dead. Mick Garris finally reveals the five directors signed on for his upcoming horror anthology, Nightmare Cinema.

00:04:00 – Review of Hellbenders (2013)
The grue-crew are thoroughly disappointed with J.T. Petty’s latest horror comedy. The notion of a group of priests whose sole function is to sin as much as possible so they can be called on to drag a demon back to hell should the need arise could be the stuff of horror dreams but the Horror News Radio co-hosts all seem to agree the director J.T. Petty misses a great opportunity with the adaptation of his graphic novel Hellbenders. Speckled with a handful of decent performances and a fun scene or two the film comes across as a great idea rather than a great film. The crew all agrees that they like the idea behind Hellbenders but each has issues that they discuss in depth.

00:39:28– Horror News of the Week for 10/28/2013
It’s news time and Dave is ready to update everyone on all the horror happenings of the week and first up is the R rated trailer for the new found footage paranormal spook-fest Skinwalker Ranch. While Dave is looking forward to this one everyone else seems a little less excited about it. Causing a little more excitement is the news that Clive Barker is taking over the reins of the remake of Hellraiser and he is insisting Doug Bradley come along for the ride. Then is to the small screen as Dave brings the gang up to speed on a new Vampire special airing on NBC and drops the news that all eight seasons of Dexter are heading to Netflix. We end the news segment discussing SNL and the hilarious fake trailer they made for a Wes Anderson horror film.
