Strangers: Prey At Night – Episode 258 – Horror News Radio

Strangers: Prey At Night is the sequel no one was anticipating nor wanted. 10 years after the original and with none of the original cast or crew involved? It sounds like something destined to fail. Yet… The Grue Crew may have liked it more than you’d think. Strangers: Prey At Night isn’t the only film on the docket, though. The genre-lite escapades of Thoroughbreds is also up for discussion as genre favorite Anya Taylor Joy joins up with a fellow teen played by Olivia Cooke with sociopathic tendencies. Yet, the true monster may not be who it seems. Plus, there’s a small review for Disney’s big release A Wrinkle In Time, the film that has so much creativity bursting at the seams… but maybe doesn’t come together too well. Dave Dreher is out this week, so Doc Rotten, Thomas Mariani and Yonathan Habtemichael have to take on Horror News of the Week by themselves. There’s plenty of stories of premieres from South By Southwest, a Jake Gyllenhaal horror film coming to Netflix and… Tommy Wiseau as The Joker? What a funny story, Doc. Ha ha ha! Then, Thomas closes things out by unmasking Phantom Factor! It’s a packed night, but worth every second.

Mom and Dad – Godzilla: Monster Planet – Episode 251 – Horror News Radio

Parenting is tough. Sure, parents love their kids. But sometimes dealing with them is enough to be driven crazy. Well, hopefully not Nicolas Cage levels of crazy. Cage reunites with the Taylor half of Neveldine/Taylor for Mom and Dad, as he and Selma Blair are compelled to murder their children. Hilarity ensues… or does it? Horror News Radio‘s Grue Crew is set out to determine. Along for the ride is filmmaker and special effects guru Bill Mulligan, who puts his kaiju knowledge to the test as he analyzes the Netflix anime film Godzilla: Monster Planet. Does the King of Monsters take well to the animation format? Given the lack of Godzooky, one could probably assume yes. Dave Dreher is, unfortunately, M.I.A., but Doc steps in to breakdown Horror News of the WeekThere’s giant kaiju trailers, an announcement of a What We Do In The Shadows TV show and the possible return of Joe Bob Briggs to horror hosting. Then, Thomas wraps everything up with the return of the game show Phantom Factor. Hazzah!

The Devil’s Candy (2017) – Episode 210 – Horror News Radio

The Grue-Crew settle down to tackle the latest film from director Sean Byrne titled The Devil’s Candy. The film universally surprised the crew with its heavy metal sensibilities and strong family core brilliantly blended with a horrific tale of madness, murder, and possession. Featuring Ethan Embry, Shiri Appleby, Kiara Glasco, and Pruitt Taylor Vince, The Devil’s Candy hits hard and fast with a quick paced 79 minutes. Highly recommended, a review to grab your attention.

For this episode’s What Have You Been Watching Segment, the Grue head over to Netflix to take in a sci-fi thriller from director Charlie McDowell and writer Justin Lader. The film is The Discovery. The premise is strong where a group of scientist proves the existence of the afterlife but the film drives off course for its over-explained finale. Regardless, the ideas are fascinating and the cast is rich featuring Robert Redford, Jason Segel, Rooney Mara, and Jesse Plemons.

Dave pilots this week’s edition of Horror News of the Week with the trailer for Thor Ragnarok, the announcement of a Haunting TV series from Mike Flanagan, and unearthed alternate endings for The Blair Witch Project. HNR and Gruesome Magazine are heading to a number of horror conventions and film festival in the coming months Crimson Screen Horror Film Festival in May to Dragon Con in September.

Co-hosts Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Dave Dreher and Thomas Mariani are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week! Oh, and don’t forget – Stump the Saint! (Brought to you by Gruesome Magazine)

Feature Review: The Devil’s Candy (2017)

The first three months of 2017 are already promising enough with films like Split, Get Out, and The Void claiming spots in the Grue-crew’s top 10 for the year. The film this week, The Devil’s Candy, is a last minute substitute feature review when the original choice was discovered to be unavailable. Wow! What a fortuitous alternative. The Devil’s Candy is yet another strong contender for the best of the year with great performances from its cast, a killer soundtrack, and shocking tale of horror. Check this one out!

What Have You Been Watching: The Discovery (2017)

With a cast like this, expectations are high for The Discovery. Certainly, Robert Redford, Mary Steenburgen, and Rooney Mara are fantastic, Jason Segel and Jesse Plemons are no slouches either. But the film, directed by Charlie McDowell, despite its incredibly fascinating setup, drops the ball, in the end, leaving the Crew a little underwhelmed. Yet, the journey was not entirely fruitless. The divisive film gets put through the wringer this week.

Eps 185 – Shin Godzilla – Luke Cage

ToHo returns with another entry in their most popular franchise ever, Shin Godzilla (2016). The film dominated the box office in Japan earning a limited run in US theaters. The big green monster is heading back to the big screen, baby, yeah! The Grue-crew follow the big guy’s roar and are here to share their thoughts and reactions. Godzilla Resurgence is on the block.

Back home, on the small screen, Marvel unleashes another 13 episodes of superhero fantasy in its string of shows heading to The Defenders. The show is Luke Cage. Mike Colter stars as Carl Lucas the man who has been transformed to a bullet proof super hero known as Luke Cage. Misty Knight, Cottonmouth, and Diamondback are not far behind. Marvel lives and breathes in the New York City streets with gritty realistic adventures. The Grue-crew share what they loved…and hated…about the show.

Doc steps in for an overworked Dave to guide the Horror News of the Week with another loss to the horror industry, R.I.P. Ted Mikels (The Corpse Grinders, The Astro-Zombies). Doc and Gruesome Magazine contributor Chad Hunt are heading to the Knoxville Horror Film Festival is coming October 21-23, 2016 in Knoxville, TN. And The Black Saint is all set for the upcoming New York City Horror Film Festival extravaganza November 10-13, 2016. Feature Review: Shin Godzilla (2016)

It has been 12 years since the last ToHo Godzilla film, Godzilla: Final Wars (2004), and two years since the Gareth Edwards US Version. Shin Godzilla has arrived and is ready to tear up Tokyo one more time. The film follows Japanese politicians as they struggle to deal with the destruction caused by the rampaging monster. They move from boardroom to boardroom as the decide on how to defeat Godzilla as he transforms from a sluggish creature to the monster Kaiju fan recognize. The Grue-crew are across the board in their reaction to the film. Oh, noes.

What Have You Been Watching: Luke Cage (2016 – Netflix)

Marvel and Netflix return with another superhero TV series, Luke Cage. Mike Colter first appeared as Cage in Jessica Jones and returns to his own series diving into Harlem. Trying to create a new life for himself, Cage ends up confronting a series of gangsters, Cottonmouth, Diamondback, and Shades with only Misty Knight at his side. The cast is phenomenal but the Grue-crew struggle with the overall story line. Mahershala Ali delivers a fantastic villain in Cornell Stokes while Rosario Dawson returns as Claire Temple. Luke Cage is set to be followed by Iron Fist and the first round of Netflix heroes concludes with The Defenders.
