Eps 116 – The Nightmare – Scares that Care

The Grue-crew climb into the dreamlike world of Rodney Ascher’s documentary about sleep paralysis, THE NIGHTMARE (2015). Following a small group of subjects relating their experiences of horrifying nightmares and being frozen in their beds, unable to move, unable to scream, sometimes unable to breathe. Paired with this are a series of reenactments that are, at times, as scary as any horror film.

Yes, Cobragator! Thomas and The Black Saint dive into the Pixar film Inside Out in the What Have You Been Watching segment. We also have an incredible interview with Joe Ripple, the promoter of Scares that Care Weekend II.

Co-hosts Doc RottenSantos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr.Dave DreherThomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, are back again this week to give you the best in horror as they recap, review and obliterate all that is horror this week! Doc announces the latest contest as HNR teams up with Diabolique Magazine for a subscription giveaway to their “Premiere Horror Genre Magazine.”

Review: The Nightmare (2015)

The synopsis is simple, “A look at a frightening condition that plagues thousands; sleep paralysis.” and so is the approach to tackling a fairly complicated subject matter. For THE NIGHTMARE, director Rodney Ascher sticks to sharing the experiences of a small gathering of poor souls who each suffer from sleep paralysis and horrifying nightmares. The Grue-crew chime in with their reactions to this unique and challenging genre documentary.

What Have You Been Watching: Inside Out

Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint plead with horror fans to take a look at Pixar’s latest film regardless of the fact it is far from horror. They both proclaim the animated feature, INSIDE OUT, to be the best film of 2015 thus far. Listen to why.

Review: The Lazarus Effect (2015)

While The Lazarus Effect seems to have all the right ingredients, an intriguing story and an impressive cast, the end results are no where near what was promised. Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, Evan Peters, Donald Glover and Sarah Bolger star in David Gelb’s horror film from Blumhouse. Listen to the Grue-crew investigate what went wrong. And, what’s this about no pants?

Review: The Voices (2015)

Director Marjane Satrapi delivers a far superior film with her dark horror comedy, The Voices starring Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Arterton, Anna Kendrick and Jacki Weaver. The film examines the effects of “voices” directing a troubled young man into making horrific and deadly decisions. Thomas and Dave share their thoughts on Reynolds terrific performance, the blend of drama, horror and comedy and the use of gore to illustrate why this film should appeal to most horror fans.

Review: Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014)

Described as a mix between Dawn of the Dead and Mad Max, Wyrmwood is receiving high praise around the internet. The grue-crew chime in on their reactions to all the zany zombie action from director Kiah Roache-Turner. The highlight of the film is easily the addition of Bianca Bradey as Brooke who goes through unimaginable transformation during the film. The action is fast paced and the gore if plentiful.
